Home to approximately 280,000 citizens, Ingham County Michigan is located in the Southern Central segment of the states lower peninsula. Ingham County is also home to the Michigan’s state capital, Lansing. With the county seat, or the administrative center of the county, being found in the city of Mason, Lansing is the only state capital to not be a county seat. Similarly to the rest of the state, Ingham County’s judicial system is comprised of a Circuit Court and a District Court.

The Circuit Court has jurisdiction over the hearing of a variety of types of cases. Some examples include any civil case where the amount in question is over $25,000, criminal felonies, and mostly all family matters which end up in court. These family matters may include juvenile delinquency, adoptions, abuse and neglect, and other such areas. The Ingham County Circuit Court System is divided into a few different divisions and is maintained by a group of nine non-partisan Judges. These Divisions include the General Trial Division, Family Division, Friend of the Court, and the Youth Center. The administration of the Court System is spread between Mason and Lansing.

The other part to the County’s Judicial Structure can be found in their District Court System. The 55th District Court has authority over Ingham County with the exceptions of Lansing and East Lansing. Consisting of two elected judges each serving six year terms, the District Court system is divided into four main divisions. These divisions include: Civil, Criminal, Traffic, and Probation. Each division deals with hearing cases in their designated area of jurisdiction.
